Aegis Academy firmly believes that safe and secure communities begin with citizens who are both informed and engaged in taking an active role in protecting themselves and the ones they love. Furthermore, we believe that mindset and awareness form the foundation safety and security with the responsible use of firearms as only one possible solution to be used as a last resort.
During an online forum on Facebook on Tuesday 19 February 2013, hosted by Parenting Magazine, Vice President Joe Biden made some comments regarding self-defense that were misleading (you don’t need an AR-15… they are harder to use), some were false (you don’t need 30 rounds to defend yourself), but the most egregious and erroneous was his recommendation on how individuals SHOULD defend themselves.
Vice President Biden quickly stated “buy a shotgun… buy a double barreled shotgun.” While Aegis Academy does not disagree with the first part of his statement, we firmly disagree with the limitation of shot capacity and, furthermore, warn citizens to not abide by the Vice President’s next statements. Looking directly into the camera, the Vice President of the United States explicitly stated the following: “I told my wife, Jill, if there’s ever a problem [at their Delaware home], just walk out on the balcony here, walk out, put that double-barrel shotgun and fire two blasts outside the house. I promise you, whoever’s coming in is not going to.”
This statement paints a strong image of how the untrained and unaware imagine a self-defense scenario might play out, it is bad advice, it is irresponsible and is illegal in many cases.
In terms of basic firearms handling, it violates 2 of the safety rules: 1. do not point your weapon at anything you do not intend to shoot; 2. understand your target, what is in the background, and what is in the foreground. Furthermore, in the military, law enforcement, and among responsible citizens, “warning shots” are not authorized as any projectile fired from a weapon will land somewhere. It is up to the responsible citizen to understand and control, to the greatest degree possible, where that projectile will land. Only well aimed and purposeful shots are taken in order to avoid collateral damage during a hostile engagement. This principle is magnified exponentially in a personal defense scenario where there is a nearly 360 degree field of loved ones and innocent citizens. Lastly, many state and local laws prohibit the discharging of a firearm, even on private property, for anything other than ending a felonious assault. Protection of property is not grounds for use of deadly force.
There are many other details regarding the Vice President’s statement that could be debated in exhaustive detail, such as having to reload immediately after the unlawful “warning shots” were taken, etc. However, we want to counter Mr. Biden’s bad advice with some good advice.
1. Develop and refine your awareness. Train yourself to detect and avoid dangerous situations. Make yourself a hard and undesirable target to potential aggressors.
2. Develop and rehearse a contingency plan should you become the target of an aggressor.
3. If there is a credible and imminent threat of a felonious assault on you or your family, call 911 and stay on the phone while gathering your family and retreating to a safe area of your home or escaping if possible. Remember that property is replaceable, life is not.
4. If there are no other alternatives, fire your weapon in center of mass to end the threat on your life. Remain vigilant on both the threat and the possibility of additional assailants.
We all hope that the “unthinkable” doesn’t happen to us or our loved ones. However, hope is not a course of action. At Aegis Academy, we believe that the combination of awareness and training provide active measures to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe and will further contribute to safe and secure communities.
